around the area today and tomorrow. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. our top story.. a warm and windy start to the week temperatures have already hit an unseasonablly warm 80-degrees in many parts of the area. our best chance for severe weather starts this afternoon. right in time for the evening commute. wgn meteorologist tom skilling will have more the storm system later in our newscast. the same weather system headed into the chicago area is being blamed for as many as 28- tornadoes in oklahoma, kansas, iowa and illinois yesterday and today. some of those reports might have been of the same tornado. oklahoma and kansas were the hardest hit. one person was killed and at least a dozen people were injured. oklahoma's governor has declared a state of emergency in sixteen counties. commuters and c-t-a bosses are giving a thumbs up to the first workday commute of the redline reconstruction project. wgn's judy wang is live in washington park with that story.

10 juveniles and two adults face citations ranging from reckless conduct, loitering, resisting police and damaging a police officer's bicycle. they are accused of being part of a group that blocked streets near the gold coast on saturday. police say the group was made up of several dozen teenagers who roamed from michigan avenue to lasalle street. the group dispersed after police showed up. parents of three of the children killed in the sandy hook elementary school massacre in newtown, connecticut are in springfield today. you're looking live at the illinois senate. which is considering a gun-control bill that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines in illinois. senate president john cullerton's office tells wgn, the sandy hook parents are expected to be in the senate gallery this afternoon and may testify at a separate executive committee session. the parents support the magazine ban and say it could save innocent lives. the group is sounding off about

convicted killer jodi arias is back in a courtroom in phoenix for the sentencing phase of her tiral. defense attorneys will present witnesses to testify on arias' behalf in an effort to spare her from a death sentence. she faces life in prison or execution. last week, jurors heard tearful comments from travis alexander's brother and sister, as they described how the murder has affected their lives . jurors are expected to begin deliberating later this week.

two f-b-i agents died in a training exercise friday just off the coast of virginia beach. christopher lorek and stephen shaw belonged to an elite hostage rescue team. they were aboard a military sealift command ship when the accident happened. the f-b-i won't say exactly what took place, but it says no gunfire was involved and the cause of the incident is under review. a terror attack on moscow has been foiled according to security forces in that country. they say they killed two militants and detained another. all three are described as russian citizens "trained in afghanistan and pakistan." in dagestan at least eight people were killed and 20 injured in attacks. in one of the incidents bombs went off inside a busy shopping area and near a government building. in a separate attack, gunmen shot and killed three policemen and injured two others. the motive behind the shooting and bombing is not clear. islamic insurgents have been responsible for several deadly attacks in the area.

the country also is tied to the alleged boston marathon bombers the brothers. north korea test-fired six missiles off its eastern coast over the weekend. the two most recent firings took place early this morning. all of the short-range missiles fell harmlessly into the water, but their firing once again raises tensions in the region. the latest incident came after south korea condemned the earlier launches. analysts believe the north was merely protesting last week's joint u.s.-south korean naval drills. president obama will lay out his counter terrorism policy later this week. he'll outline his updated policy thursday at the national defense university in washington. topics will include the use of military drones against terrorists, which has been criticized by human rights activists. the president will also talk about closing the prison at guantanamo bay, which he first pledged to do during his presidential campaign five years ago. just ahead a new study about an every-day item that has more germs than a toilet. and, still to come this midday:

eruptions of storms out west. a huge spring storm center out here in minnesota. there are the storms that went to oklahoma after a. they moved up into missouri. up until now the storms were moving into an unfavorable environment. the set up has now shifted into our area. these obviously were deadly. here's the plot of all of the storm reports and every little red icon is where a tornado touched down. others upton to kansas and missouri. we have not had a touchdown. in this mass of reports out here in western illinois. most of the other icons represent hill reports. widely scattered

thunderstorms this afternoon. between seven and nine storms are to arrive in the city in greater numbers. by midnight they're still roaming the areas. things calm down a little bit. we may get some good downpour's with these thunderstorms in addition to the severe weather producing capability. there is our storm. the powerful southerly winds are moving into this area with humidity. you see how the storm clusters blow up. a judge in cuts to the air mass. what happens is the air rises and begins to rotate. the

we are following some breaking news at this hour. a deadly accident involving a van carrying a group from a church in southern illinois. it happened in vandalia. which is northeast of saint louis. police say the van flipped over and crashed on the side of the road. at least 14-people have been taken to the hospital. some with serious injuries. there are unconfirmed reports that four people were killed. the accident backed up interstate-70 for miles. we'll have more information on the wgn evening news. in medical watch. a possible link between

childhood a-d-h-d, and obesity later in life a new study finds men who had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as children show a significantly greater risk of being overweight or obese as adults. even if their a-d-h-d has remitted in adulthood. researchers evaluated more than 200 men who had childhood a-d-h- d and compared them with men who did not have it. the men with childhood a-d-h-d had significantly higher body mass index and higher obesity rates. other studies have noted associations between obesity and a-d-h-d but this is the first to do so in adults diagnosed as children. you may be toting bacteria in the purse you carry every day! a new study from a hygiene and washroom services company warns germs populate the inside of women's purses. the researchers say one in five handbags they tested had levels of bacteria-related contamination, and contained more germs than the average toilet flush.

an infectious disease specialist says it's highly unlikely someone would get sick from a handbag.. but people should still take precautions to stop the spread of germs.. including using anti-bacterial wipes to clean the bottom and handles of the bag. and why consumer watchdogs say some sunscreen labels may be misleading. new f-d-a rules now require labels designed to make sunscreens more effective and easier to use. but the environmental working group says one in seven products it surveyed still list a sunscreen protection factor, or s-p-f, over 50. the consumer group says that's misleading because the difference between s-p-f 50 and 100 is actually negligible. experts say s-p-f numbers like 100 or 150 can give users a false sense of security.. leading them to stay out in the sun too long. sun too long.
